Intense Pulsed Light Dry Eye Treatment (IPL) for clear, comfortable vision
Dry eye disease can make everyday tasks like reading, driving, or using a computer uncomfortable.. For many people, the problem starts with the oil glands in the eyelids (meibomian gland dysfunction). At Arkansas Eye Care Group, we offer Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL) to help reduce inflammation, support healthier oil flow, and keep your tear film stable. This means less burning, less blurriness, and more comfort every day.
How Do I Know If I Have Dry Eye?
f you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms several days a week, it might be time for an evaluation:
- Burning, stinging, or a gritty sensation (like there’s something in your eye)
- Blurry or fluctuating vision that improves after blinking
- Light sensitivity or redness
- Excess tearing (watery eyes) caused by irritation
- Stringy mucus or sticky eyelids
- Contact lens discomfort or trouble with night driving
Dry eye syndrome is common, and the good news is that it’s very treatable. Our team will work with you to figure out whether your dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (evaporative dry eye) or aqueous tear deficiency (low tear production). Then, we’ll adjust your treatment plan to provide the best results for your eyes.
What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light Treatment is a gentle, in-office light therapy that targets the skin just beneath your eyes. The light helps calm irritation, warms the area, and improves the function of the oil glands in your eyelids. This leads to better oil production, which supports a healthier tear film and reduces evaporation, ultimately easing dry eye symptoms.
In simple terms, IPL helps your eyes stay moist longer by improving the oil your glands produce.
How IPL Treatment Works & What You Can Expect
Our team works hard to make sure your treatment experience is easy, comfortable, and effective. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Dry Eye Evaluation
First, we’ll assess your eyes to determine the cause of your dry eye symptoms. If your dry eye is caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), we’ll recommend IPL to improve gland function and reduce symptoms.
2. Prep and Protection
We’ll place protective eye shields over your eyes and apply a cooling gel to the skin below your lower lids before beginning the treatment.
3. Light Therapy
Short pulses of light are applied to the skin. You may feel a quick, mild “snap” or warmth. The treatment itself is quick, easy, and relatively painless, with no recovery downtime.
4. Series and Maintenance
Typically, 4 IPL sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart are recommended to get the best results. After your series, some patients choose to schedule occasional maintenance treatments to keep their symptoms in check.
5. At-Home Support
To support your treatment, we may recommend warm compresses, lid hygiene, or prescription eye drops to maintain a healthy ocular surface. We also suggest avoiding excessive sun exposure for 48 hours after treatment.
Other Causes of Dry Eye & Recommended Treatments
While MGD is one of the most common causes of dry eye, it’s not the only one. Several factors can contribute to dry eye symptoms, and our team will work with you to identify the cause and recommend the best treatment for your needs:
- Aqueous Tear Deficiency: If your eyes aren’t producing enough tears, dryness and discomfort can occur. We may recommend prescription eye drops that stimulate tear production or punctal plugs (which block tear drainage) to help conserve your natural tears..
- Environmental Factors: Exposure to wind, dry air, smoke, or prolonged screen time can exacerbate dry eye symptoms. We’ll suggest lifestyle changes, like using humidifiers, taking breaks during screen time, and wearing protective eyewear (like sunglasses) to reduce environmental impacts.
- Contact Lens Wear: Long-term use of contact lenses can cause or worsen dry eye, especially if the lenses do not allow enough oxygen to reach the cornea. We may recommend switching to breathable lenses, scleral lenses, or adjusting your wearing schedule. IPL can also help improve meibomian gland function in contact lens wearers.
- Aging & Hormonal Changes: As we age, tear production naturally decreases, and for women, hormonal changes during menopause can also contribute to dry eye. Treatments like warm compresses and prescription eye drops can help address these age-related changes.
At Arkansas Eye Care Group, we’ll work closely with you to determine the cause of your dry eye and create a treatment plan designed to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.
Frequently Asked
Heat masks warm the lids from the outside, while IPL uses light therapy to reduce inflammation and help the oil glands function better. Many patients benefit from using both as part of their dry eye care plan.
Most people complete four sessions over 2–4 months, with maintenance as needed.
Yes, IPL can reduce the dilated surface vessels tied to rosacea, which often improves meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye symptoms.
Your doctor will provide care for tear conservation and prescription eye drops, and may not recommend IPL if oil gland function is not the main issue.
